I've been interested in ham radio since early childhood. In the
summer of 1973 (when 11), I discovered for the first time the world of
Citizen's Band. A few months later finally I had as Christmas present my
first CB station: a quite unknown mobile rig with 23 channels and 5 watts power output
Marko 3
and a simple 1/4 wavelenght Ground Plane.
In those years CB was
becoming very popular in Italy, especially among young people. Radios were not
cheap anyway, and only a few lucky amateurs could afford to buy those SSB base
rigs and big antennas to enjoy some DXs on summer time. My dream station was at
that time the Pearce Simpson Simba SSB, the Turner +3 desk mike
and the Starduster 5/8 wavelenght antenna. In a few years my skill in radio and electronics
increased and since 1976 I started to write some articles on italian
popular
electronics magazines like
CQ Elettronica and Radio Elettronica till
to reach national finals in Philips European Contest for Young Scientist.
At the end of 70s CB rapidly transformed itself
into a "radio chat" for youngsters and it lost its interest. I was
on air again some years later with a President AR 7 (40 ch.) from my car
during short trips or holidays in Abruzzi and Tuscany. The following years while in college (Electronics
Engineering) I operated as SWL/BCL with a
Kenwood QR666
and a
homebrew dipole. Later on I added a vertical antenna and a frequency counter both
homebrew too.
I worked in broadcast regional radio in 1980-1982 as audio
engineer and eventually as radio announcer.
In 1989, after graduation I sold my receiver before my
military duty, served as 1st class corporal - TLC operator in Italian Air
Forces.
The recent story... after a QRT lasted 14 years, on
september 2004 I got my Class B license and my call
IWØHOU. My activity was at first concentrated on 2 mt. SSB
phone contests and on 6 mt. DXs, but also Satellite phone and
ISS Packet/APRS. After my Class B license was upgraded to Class A in
2005, I started to operate in HF phone, RTTY and PSK31.I joined the italian
ham radio association
ARI
in 2006 and
ARRL
in 2007 and began my collection of ham radio awards. I was
the first "IW" to obtain the 5BDXCC, the 5BWAZ, the DXCC
Challenge and also DXCC in
80,40,30,17,15, 10 meters awards.
In 2008 I joined the
INDEXA and in 2009 the
Mediterraneo DX Club.
